Smooth Study Life in Functional Spaces Supports Students' Well-being
The Aleksandria Learning Center, which was completed in 2003 next to the Kaisa House on Fabianinkatu, has been closed during the 2024–2025 academic year due to extensive renovation work. During the closure, the services of Aleksandria have been planned in cooperation with students, teachers, and doctoral researchers.
"We are happy in the library that the Learning Center Aleksandria has been renovated to meet the current needs of students. We have collected and listened to students' wishes and opinions in pop-up workshops that started in the fall of 2023," says Kirsi Mäenpää, the service director responsible for learning spaces at the library.
With the completion of Aleksandria, the number of study spaces available to university students at Helsinki University Library will increase by more that 300 on the city center campus. The variety of spaces will also become more diverse.
"Aleksandria is a house for learning. At the heart of the renovation are the smoothness of studying and students' well-being. Extended opening hours, bookable group workspaces, and versatile, sensory-friendly, and ergonomic spaces will enable students to plan their study day in a way that suits them," Mäenpää continues.
"The Aleksandria Learning Center is located next to the Kaisa Library and will offer students extended opening hours and a wider variety of spaces. For example, participating in remote lectures during the day will be easier from Aleksandria's lounge or its small group rooms. We believe that smooth study routines and versatile workspaces support students' well-being."
The construction site will be handed over to the client, the university, in mid-May. After that, the spaces will be furnished, and final installations for electricity and telecommunications will take place. The renovated Aleksandria Learning Center is expected to open in July.
